A very long distance birthday

IMG_0646Our son, Charlie, turns 26 today. What a gift God has given us in our children and what an amazing gift Charlie is to me. He lives, and is going to grad school, at UC Berkeley, so he isn’t back ‘home’ in Minnesota. We may be on different continents, but thankfully a mother’s love bridges all distance.

Happiest of birthdays, sweet Charlie! So miss you and look forward to seeing your face and hearing your voice later today, on video chat! Love you and looking forward to your next 26 years! Love, Mom

An album I created seven years ago for Charlie’s birthday is just as cute today, his 26th birthday! Happy, happy,…

Music Videos by Some of God’s Brightest

In 36 hours our son, Charlie, heads back to Boston University until who knows when.   As I reflect back on his four-week visit and our Christmas/New Year’s celebrations I think of family gatherings, Charlie’s girlfriend’s visit from New Jersey, friends, football, laughter, hugs, tears, Yahtzee, Scrabble, Crash Bandicoot, snowmobiling, and something that is always present when half the family (i.e. the children) is rip roaringly talented: music.

I created a YouTube channel (http://www.youtube.com/user/jodimqhill) today to share some of these musical moments with the world, for the world needs to see and hear the gifting of two of her finest, Charlie and Emily Hill.  Yes, I’m proud.  Yes, I’m biased.  Yes, yes, yes.  Still, God has gifted them and He calls us to shine with who we are and what He has given us.

“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” (Matt 5: 14-16)

Below are the videos I took this past month.  Others, taken earlier, I’ll post on my YouTube channel later, after the kids go back to college, when I’m not taking time away from being with them.  Hope you enjoy!

The first is a silly, fun one of our youngest, Emily, with her cousin, Kayla (who has a beautiful voice).  Yes, the video is dark.  If unable to view, visit: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CFX7pPIswys

The second is of our son, Charlie, singing with his girlfriend, Sophia (an amazing singer with her own YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/sophiapascual).  They are singing  “Who Am I?” by Casting Crowns.  If unable to view, visit: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0lVlKMSFP5k

Charlie Performing in Thoroughly Modern Millie

Many of you know about my fabulously talented kids as I toot their horn unabashedly, here, there and everywhere… Charlie, a junior at Boston University, is singing/dancing/acting in a student-led musical this weekend, entitled Thoroughly Modern Millie.

Bothered to distraction that I’m missing it, I hunted down a YouTube video that shows him performing.  He is on the right side of the screen after the men enter.  “There are those…I suppose…”, his solo, will help you spot him (tall blonde with red lettered sweatshirt) and give you a glimpse of his amazing voice.  Enjoy!!

Oh, and no, it isn’t your computer…the video is dark…

Charlie: way to shine!!  Break a leg tonight!!

Charlie in the J. Geils/Aerosmith Concert at Fenway Park

Charlie (pictured with his sister, Emily), our about to become a junior at Boston University son, plays in BU’s Scarlet Band–a summer marching band that performs for freshmen orientations.  Someone in high places who loves SB, got the band an invite to kick things off at the J. Geils Band/Aerosmith concert at Fenway Park this past Saturday (8/14/10).

Looking smart in brand new red & white marching uniforms, this ensemble of 42 instrumentalists stepped on stage and performed Centerfold for roughly 25,000 people….yep, twenty-five thousand people!  What a rush!!  After generous applause SB stepped off stage and J. Geils came on and performed Centerfold.  (visit BU’s photo page for visuals–Charlie is third from the left in photo # 15, the trumpet section photo.  Sorry, don’t have permission to post any of these photos here…)

Charlie and his fellow band members not only got all stage passes and a ‘hello’ with The J. Geils Band, they received free tickets to the show.  Rockin’ and packed solid, Fenway swelled and swayed for the hometown boys–J. Geils and Aerosmith–and the hometown boys didn’t disappoint.  Charlie mentioned this moment in the Aerosmith concert as truly awesome:  lead singer, Steven Tyler, on the Green Monster singing Dream On:

A rehearsal of The Scarlet Band’s performance of Centerfold, is at http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=913810524230&ref=mf or visit the Boston University Bands facebook page and scroll down the left hand column to the videos section, to the video entitled BU Marching Band plays “Centerfold” (the other video, of them in uniform is good too, just not stellar like this one).  Charlie is the 5th trumpet player from the right–blond with red shirt, white gloves.  I think you’ll agree, the trumpets blow the lid off this number! (Unfortunately, no video is available for me to post here…:-(  I’ll post a video–or link–of the actual performance, if one ever becomes viewable/available.)

Congrats, Charlie, on a truly shining moment!!  Congrats, Scarlet Band, for making the big time!  We’re all bursting with pride!
